Recognition of the need for last resort intervention and the therapeutic approach to resolving conflict underpins the complex course, each candidate will be clear on safe handling and appropriate technique for safe guarding those they care for.

Course outline:

· Recognizing Agitation and the causes

· Awareness of contributing factors to the escalation of agitation

· Techniques for appropriate effective de-escalation of agitation and aggression

· Non-threatening Non-judgmental approaches to conflict

· Safe breakaway and disengagement

· Functional competencies. C & R

· One & two person approaches

· Risk assessment and safe approaches

· Group work/stopping fighting

· Legislation & reasonable force

· Poor technique and areas to be avoided

· Recognizing signs and responses to positional asphyxia
