Overview
The course is designed and suitable for qualified podiatrists with clinical experience and an interest in sports medicine. It is a very practical course with multidisciplinary approach to patient management, so it should also appeal to those who simply want to enhance their clinical knowledge and expertise.
This programme is based on the philosophy that the total care for the athlete requires a multidisciplinary approach underpinned by evidenced based medicine.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity in the future, possibly as early as 2018, to sit a Fellowship examination in Podiatric Sports Medicine which will be awarded by The Directorate of Podiatric Medicine, College of Podiatry, London.
Students will have the opportunity to transfer from the PGCert to an MSc/PGDip in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
The programme is delivered by Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) within the William Harvey Research Institute and as such, will place the School at the forefront of provision of Podiatric Sports Medicine (PSM) within the UK. Working in sport is a largely practical discipline and the programme's emphasis lies firmly on regular clinical experience. Students will benefit from regular contact with members of Sports and Exercise Medicine at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), as well as visiting clinicians and lecturers who are experienced Sports Medicine specialists.
This course is designed to offer a mastery of foundation concepts and skills in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Lectures will be delivered by national and international experts; from cutting edge basic scientists to podiatric surgeons, sports physicians, physiotherapists and other health professionals working with world-class athletes. Our staff will work closely with students to nurture potential research interests and to develop clinical ability in Sports and Exercise Medicine. d in the UK for its academic strength and excellence. Structure
Modular Structure
Each module is worth 15 Master’s level credits, and 60 Master’s level credits are required in order for students to be awarded the Post Graduate Certificate.
Time Commitment
Each module involves 150 hours of study. For the taught modules this will be 25% taught work and 75% private study.
It is important to recognise that the course requires a significant time commitment, especially when undertaken in one academic year. Those who are choosing to complete the course whilst working will need to pay special attention to their schedules in order to leave adequate time for attending classes, clinics, and for the substantial private study component required for the course.
MODULESCore Modules
- Sports Injury Assessment I (Multidisciplinary – Medics and Allied healthcare professionals).
- Podiatry and Biomechanics (Multidisciplinary – Medics and Allied healthcare professionals).
- Imaging in Sports Medicine (Multidisciplinary – Medics and Allied healthcare professionals).
- Podiatric Sports Medicine (Podiatrists only)
Module Leader: Dr Ritan Mehta (Sports Physician)
AIMS- To present a comprehensive detailed approach to clinical assessment of presenting injury
- To describe multi-factorial paradigms for the management of injured athletes
- To present an overview of sports specific injuries
- To develop good to excellent handling skills
- Students will be able to accurately and reliably clinically assess acute, subacute and chronic injuries forming a working diagnosis
- Students will be able to link the sports specific aspects of the presentation, the pathomechanics, the available evidence base for practice and the individual presentation in a sophisticated fashion. This will allow formation of an evidence based multi-disciplinary management plan.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of differential diagnosis in a wide range of clinical situations.
- Students will have good handling skills.
Module Leader: Dr Nat Padhiar (Podiatric Surgeon)
AIMSThe main aim of the module is to provide a sound but practical basis of anatomy, pathophysiology, pathomechanics and mechanism of injuries of the foot, ankle and leg.
LEARNING OUTCOMESThe module will allow the practitioner to be competent and confident in recognising common foot, ankle and leg injuries. At the end of the module, the practitioner will be equipped to confidently make a diagnosis, differential diagnosis, request appropriate investigations, recognise biomechanical abnormalities and provide treatment or refer appropriately.
IMAGING IN SPORTS MEDICINE – SEMESTER 2Module Leaders: Dr Sujit Vaidya & Dr Otto Chan (Radiologists)
N.B. This module runs as a short course format over four days.
AIMS- Provide an understanding of the physiological and technical basis of imaging modalities in Sports Medicine
- Provide an in depth knowledge and understanding of the selection of appropriate imaging techniques based on clinical situations, safety and cost
- Develop a practical skill in Ultrasound scanning for HCPs working in Sports Medicine in line with recommendations from professional bodies
- Develop a basic knowledge of the interpretation of non-ultrasound imaging techniques
- Provide essential skills to achieve safe and accurate attainment and interpretation of the US/MRI/CT/Xray images
PODIATRIC SPORTS MEDICINE – SEMESTER 2
Module Leaders: Dr Nat Padhiar & Mr Trevor Prior (Podiatric Surgeons)
This Podiatric Sports Medicine module will provide students with an understanding of the broader implication of medicine and the criteria for referral within Sports Medicine. It will additionally focus on advanced diagnostic skills in the clinical environment and develop skills in ultrasound, building upon previous modules.
An understanding of and ability to provide a range of evidence-based interventions is an essential component of Podiatric Sports Medicine. This will be achieved by developing the ability to critically appraise the literature combined with the necessary knowledge base and practical skills in pharmacology, injection therapy, wound care, suturing and rehabilitation techniques.
AIMS
- An outline of the general medical considerations and criteria for referral in Sports Medicine
- Advanced methods of clinical diagnosis in Sports Medicine
- The current evidence base in Podiatric Sports Medicine
- Advanced skill in making a diagnosis, requesting and interpreting investigations and plan effective treatment modalities in Podiatric Sports Medicine
- The role of the Podiatric Sports Medicine Specialist Facilitate within the multidisciplinary team.
On Successful completion of this module the student will be able to:
- Accurately and reliably clinically assess acute, subacute and chronic injuries forming a working diagnosis and differential diagnosis
- Link the sports specific aspects of the presentation, the pathomechanics, the available evidence base for practice and the individual presentation in a sophisticated fashion. This will allow formation of an evidence based multi-disciplinary management plan.
- Apply advanced techniques including injection therapy (with and without image guided) and, shockwave therapy and wound care and suturing.
- Critically appraise the relevant clinical evidence.
