A short course in digital photo editing aimed at near beginners using this popular Open Source software, downloadable free from the Internet. Some basic experience of using a computer is desirable.

What does the course involve?
You will learn through tutor demonstration and practical hands-on experience of The GIMP software. The tutor will provide suitable sample images to edit, but you may if you wish edit your own images at certain points in the course.

What will I study?
Changing the size and orientation of an image We will cover a range of techniques to crop photographs to create not only oblong shapes but circular and elliptical images. We will discover how to flip an image and to rotate it accurately, for example, to straighten the horizon.

Adjusting colour balance We will investigate the Levels, Curves and Colour Balance settings to make fine adjustments to an image.

Making changes using the Clone Tool The Clone Tool can be used to remove blemishes or to repair an image. We will also look at ways of using it to add new elements to an image.

Applying Special Effects The GIMP offers a wide range of filters to apply subtle or dramatic changes to your images. We will explore some of these and give you an opportunity to be creative with the software.

Using Layers Layers open up a wide range of editing possibilities, effectively creating a vertical stack of several images or multiple versions of the same image to manipulate and combine them.
