Course programme
This course will introduce you to the creative possibilities of traditional film and digital photography, whilst at the same time help you to develop a greater appreciation for the medium. During the course you will take part in several informal workshops that encourage you to explore the many functions that a digital camera shares with a film camera, and learn how to use a B&W darkroom and digital editing software to produce prints. Each workshop will be supplemented by a slideshow lecture on historical and contemporary artwork that explore a range of creative approaches, and form the basis for the various assignments designed to help you develop your picture making skills.
The course begins with a talk on basic camera operation; choice of lens, focus control, light meters, ISO, selection of shutter speeds & apertures, and the characteristics of certain films and digital file formats will all be covered.
Subsequent workshops will address more specific topics such as:
- Composition & framing techniques
- Creative camera control
- Exposure & how to use a flash
- B&W darkroom developing & printing
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom editing workflow
- Ink-Jet prints & photo-books
The assignments set at the end of each of these sessions will give you an opportunity to explore different themes (such as Portraits or Street Photography), and provide the means for generating images to work with over the course. Finally, the course concludes with an informal review of everyone’s work and offers you the chance to get some valuable feedback and to consider how you might progress when the course finishes.
Note: You need to have a digital camera to do this course, but the photography department has several film cameras that could be used for the duration of the course.
Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
