Course programme

BA (Hons) Photography

Mode:
full-time

Manchester and the North West is a rich cultural and artistic centre from which the course benefits, and you will be encouraged to participate in the community, especially through exhibition.

You will study
Year 1 is aimed at introducing learning, research, and technical skills. You will be encouraged to undertake a series of set projects introducing approaches relevant to the development of a photographic practice. These introductions are designed to encourage you to develop your creativity and understanding through photography.

In Year 2 you will develop your own individual style and approach. The emphasis is on risk taking and the exploration of and experimentation with ideas, research methods, and imaginative approaches to practice.

In Year 3 you will focus on realising your creative potential by undertaking a major self-directed project. This practical body of work is supported by the writing of a contextual essay and research projects which will help to critically inform the practical work.

Throughout all years you will undertake a lecture-based study course to help develop a critical and historical awareness of your own practice by introducing a wide range of ideas and debates appropriate to photography in particular and art and design in general.

Assessment
Assessment takes place at the end of each unit. There is an exhibition of students work at the Degree Show in June.

Placements
Students get the opportunity to undertake a number of live briefs with companies e.g. the Nikon Discovery Awards, Epson awards.
