Who is this course for?
This course is for users of Photoshop who wish to bring their skills up to Intermediate level. Photoshop is the industry standard for all photo retouching and the course will be enjoyed not only by photographers and artists, but also by anyone who wishes to manipulate pictures, including editing, colour correction, paint9ing, and compositing. Knowledge of Photoshop is essential if you intend to work as a graphic designer and is very useful if you are a web page developer using images, or work in Desktop publishing.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
This is the second stage and is for students who have successfully completed Photoshop Introduction. If you have not completed Photoshop Introduction but have previous experience of using Photoshop, you need to demonstrate Introductory skills at an Advice and Guidance interview.

Intermediate.

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
This course will provide further techniques in image manipulation with Photoshop. Summary of course contents is as follows. Using History and History Brush. Masking techniques : Quickmask Mode, Layer Masks, Adjustment Layers, Clipping groups, Vectors in a bitmap program. RGB to Greyscale conversion methonds, including LAB mode. Duotone images. Channels and Channel mixing. Photo enhancing techniques. Project development with own scanned images. Colour profiles and output. Learning outcomes including what the student will be able to do:
  • Create document to set specifications, mode and content such as print to specific output.
  • Alter/set resolution of images previously scanned or saved.
  • Save the image in appropriate format for a range of output/uses such as print or web.
  • Adjust the colour balance of an image selecting from a range of options to correct tone and colour.
  • Adjust colour/tone without affecting original pixels.
  • Alter the mode of a greyscale image applying colour on different layers and in different opacities.
  • Make selections within an image using full range of selection tools appropriate to task.
  • Add and subtract from selections.
  • Manage layers by various actions such as selecting, duplicating, deleting or linking.
  • Partially mask the content of layers.
  • Create a coherent composite image from several different source documents, including scanned images and objects.
  • Manipulate multiple effects applied to text or image.
What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Each student will work with his or her own computer. Smartboard interactive demos, step by step instruction, supervised practical work and reference notes. Smartboard demonstrations, 1 to 1 support, handouts, individual and group tasks and project work supported with verbal and written feedback.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
As well as continuous feedback from your tutor, you will be handing in specific pieces of work which you will achieve during the course. This is portfolio building rather than exams.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
Working Men's College Certificate of Achievement.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Students need to commit to making time outside of class to practice; at home or in the college using the Mac and G5 Server facilities. You are able to access your work from the server if you are practicing in the college. You may also take resource materials home if you bring a USB key.

What can I do after completing this course?
The next progression is Photoshop Advanced. Other progressions include Illustrator, Video Editing, Dreamweaver, Flash.
