General college entry requirements 6 GCSE's grades A - C. GCSE PE and a grade C or above in Science would be an advantage but not a pre requisite. An interest in sport is essential.

Course Content:
The course consists of both theoretical and practical modules which have the following aim:
The aim is on participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle.

AS
Unit 1: An introduction to Physical Education
Candidates will acquire an appreciation of topics including anatomy and physiology, acquiring movement skills and socio-cultural studies relating to participation in physical activity

Unit 2: Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education
Candidates will experience activities from across different activity and work towards responding to a live performance in one of their own assessed activities

Unit 3: Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education
This unit has two sections:
Section A: Socio- Cultural options
- Comparative Studies (Option A2)

Candidates will acquired an appreciation of the factors that impact upon participation and competence in physical activity in each of the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA) and Australia.

Section B: Scientific options - Sports Psychology (option B1)

Candidates will acquire an appreciation of the sports psychology factors that impact upon participation and competence in physical activity
Exercise and Sport physiology (Option B3)
Candidates will acquire an appreciation of how the body changes as a result of physical activity.
Unit 4: The Improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in physical Education
Candidates will build upon the skills acquired and developed in unit 2 in one of their chosen activities and work towards responding to a live performance in their own assessed activity.

Students will take part in both theory and practical based lessons. Group work is an essential part of physical education programme and where possible students are encouraged to take part in investigative work. It is compulsory to take part in practical lessons and represent the college in one sport. Students should note that a large part of the programme is theory based, which requires extensive research.

Assessment:
AS

Unit 1 An Introduction to Physical Education
60% of the total AS GCE marks 2 hour written paper (90 marks)

Unit 2 Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education
40% of the total AS GCE marks Practical (80 marks)
Candidates are assessed in two activities in two chosen activities from two different activity profiles and in a response to a live performance

A2

Unit 3 Principles and concepts across different areas of Physcial Education
35% of the total Advanced GCE marks 2.5 written paper (105 marks)
This unit is synoptic

Unit 4 The Improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education.
15% of the total Advanced GCE marks (60 marks).
Candidates will be assessed in one activity and in a response to a live performance.
This unit is synoptic.

Skills & Commitment:
Students will be required to have an interest in physical activities and be willing to participate in the College sports programme, which includes clubs, teams and extra curricular activities. Students must be prepared to show a commitment to all aspects of the programme including sporting fixtures.

Cost:
Students will be required to provide appropriate kit for practical activities. All students will need swimwear for the swimming component. It is hoped that students will embark upon a sports activity trip organised by the PE department.

Progression:
Progression routes include BA (Hons) in Physical Education, Human Movement Studies, Sports Studies BA Joint (Hons) leisure and recreation Management, BSc (Hons) Sports Science, BA (QTS) Physical Education, HND Leisure Studies, Leisure Management or Leisure and Tourism related degrees.

Complimentary Subjects:
Complementary subjects include levels in Geography, Business Studies, Biology, and Psychology.
