Physics, A2-level
About the Course
Teaching and learning is based on experience, class discussions, practical work and individual study on problems that often involve background reading.
AS Level
Unit 1: Mechanics (30%)
You will study the effects of forces on motion, equilibrium and the concepts of work, energy and power. Concepts are applied to areas such as car safety features, speed camera function, bridge design, GPS and roller-coasters.
Unit 2: Electrons, Waves and Photons(50%)
First you study DC circuits and apply your knowledge to semiconductors, potential dividers and LDRs. A study of waves includes interference and stationary waves, which have applications in musical instruments, and the dangers of sunlight. A final section on quantum physics addresses intriguing areas such as wave-particle duality and the photoelectric effect.
Unit 3: Practical Skills Assessment(20%)
You will carry out three tasks set by the exam board. These address the practical and investigative skills you have developed through study of AS concepts.
A2 Level
Unit 4: The Newtonian World (30%)
You will study areas such as Newton†s laws of motion, momentum, oscillations and hermal physics and then apply concepts of understanding collisions, satellite motion and materials.
Unit 5: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics (50%)
This synoptic unit covers areas as diverse as electromagnetism, nuclear physics, medical imaging and the structure of the universe. Applications include the dangers of the solar wind, back-up PC power supplies, MRI scanners and the fate of the universe.
Unit 6: Practical Skills in Physics (20%) You will carry out three tasks set by the exam board. These address the practical and investigative skills you have developed further through study of A2 concepts.
