About this course
You will need a minimum of a grade B from higher tier GCSE Maths and two grade C's from higher tier GCSE Science. This is in addition to the college entry requirement of five GCSE's at grade C or above.

What is this course all about?
The course aims to develop essential knowledge and understanding in physics and to apply this to a wide variety of applications and developments in science and technology.
What Topics will I study?
AS units
Unit 1: mechanics and materials.
Unit 2: waves, electricity and the nature of light.
Unit 3: exploring physics.
A2 units
Unit 4: further mechanics, electric and magnetic fields and particle physics.
Unit 5: thermal energy, nuclear decay, oscillations, astrophysics and cosmology.
Unit 6: experimental physics.
How will my work be assessed?
In the AS course unit 1 (40% of the AS marks) will be taken in January with units 2 (40% of the marks) and 3 (20%) in June.
At A2 unit 4 (40% of the A2 marks) will be taken in January with units 5 (40%) and 6 (20%) in June.

What skills do I need to succeed?
You need to be able to demonstrate practical techniques, record your observations and explain and interpret your results. Mathematical ability is also needed as numerical and algebraic skills are important in physics.
What knowledge do I need to succeed?
The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills that were achieved in GCSE Science and Maths.
What are the lessons like?
Much of the theoretical work in physics can be tested practically and lessons usually contain a mixture of theory and group practicals. Most classes contain a tutorial element where the teacher will set examples and work individually with students to check on learning and progress.
What have I got to do to do well?
Learn and take an interest in the physics studied and apply it to solving problems and experimental work.

What do people do with A level Physics
It is a required A level for degree courses in engineering, astronomy and the physical sciences and is a sound preparation for a wide range of other opportunities including radiography, biotechnology, astronomy, the armed forces, the aviation industry (including pilot training) and medicine.
On a cultural level some students experience a sense of amazement as they begin to see how particle physics has informed our understanding of the natural world and the nature of the universe.
