This workshop-style class will introduce you to working with an acoustic piano in a group situation. Achieve greater confidence in co-ordination of hands, rhythmical work and a range of dynamics. Improve your musicianship, and aural awareness. You will extend your theoretical knowledge in order to fully understand the pieces being studied. This course is taught in a friendly and supportive environment.

About this course

- Perform at least 3 pieces on the piano from the class repertoire
- Be able to use gradual dynamics
- Perform 4 major scales and 4 minor scales suitable for the level
- Understand the skills required for effective duet playing
- Organising practice time.

Students should have access to a keyboard or piano for practice between classes plus material; one or two printed books as decided by the students (approx. cost £10 each).

Course programme

- Developing dynamic range
- Developing co-ordination skills in variety of articulations i.e. play one hand legato and one staccato.
- Duet playing
- Technical problems, style and performance skills will be discussed
- Develop practice strategies
- Performance anxiety and coping strategies.
- Learning pieces in a variety of styles, both Classical and popular.

Classes will comprise playing/listening workshop style on an acoustic piano and in individual practice rooms, and tutor explanation and demonstration. Sessions will also include aural skills, duet playing – a fun way of developing listening and rhythm skills - and theoretical study. Students are required to practise a minimum of 30 minutes a day.

Additional information

We recommend three modules of study at Transition B level. After three modules have been completed your teacher will advise you to move to Piano workshop 3. You may also be interested in Music theory, Practical Musicianship or Music appreciation courses.
