Who is this course for?
This course is designed for anyone who wishes to develop their knowledge of the basic elements of music and musical notation and follows on from the Introduction class It is a very useful preparation for all kinds of music students. Those who attend the Singing, Blues, Harmonica and Drums and Percussion and Music technology classes will find it a useful complement to their learning, while those engaged in private study of any instrument will find that it will help demystify the language of music.

What previous knowledge/experience are required?
Some musical knowledge is required since new students will be joining an ongoing class. This should be discussed with a member of the music department.

What is the level of the course?
Level 1

What will the course cover and what can I expect to do by the end of it?
The course covers lower intermediate rhythm, harmony, and melody. Note values, time signatures, musical symbols, construction of the major and minor scales up to key signatures with three sharps or flats, scales and key signatures of major and minor keys. Learning outcomes including what the student will be able to do:
  • Know Note values
  • Know Simple time signatures
  • Know The stave : treble (G) and Bass (F) clefs
  • Know Some frequently used terms and signs
  • Know the Construction of the major scale
  • Know the Construction of the harmonic/melodic minor scale
  • Know the Scales and key signatures of some major keys
  • Know the Scales and key signatures of some minor keys
What teaching and learning methods will be used on the course?
Lectures, written and practical exercises, video and audio recordings, internet.

How will we assess your progress on the course?
There will be continuous assessment through exercises set by the tutor. Students will sit ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examinations grade 2, 3 or 4.

What type of qualification will passing this course give me?
A Working Men's College Certificate A grade certificate from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

What extra study/practice do we expect you to do outside the class?
Students are expected to read recommended reading materials outside of class time.

What can I do after completing this course?
Music Theory - Intermediate Students can progress to other music course within the college

Are there any other costs? (e.g. materials, equipment or books I need to buy before or during the course)
You will need manuscript paper, a notebook, pen, pencil and rubber. It is also useful if you have access to some kind of piano keyboard, acoustic or electric. There are also set books that cover the requirements for the ABRSM grades. The examination fee is not included in the course cost. ABRSM fees are published annually. The fees for each grade vary, but are currently set at £20 to £27 for each candidate.

Are there any other requirements?
You are required to attend every lesson on time.
