Learn the techniques and creative processes of planting design. Discover a range of useful and beautiful plants to use in different conditions and their design attributes. Develop the skills used by garden designers, such as using focal points and triangulation to plot your planting areas. You will participate in group workshops and independent projects, including drawing plans and elevations, research and mood boards, plant identifications, basic botany and ordering methods.

About this course

- Understand form and function of design elements
- Have an awareness of different planting styles and their effects
- Undertake visual research and compile mood boards
- Create the functional planting plan of a small garden to a brief, making both artistic and practical decisions
- Understand the basic principles behind plant nomenclature
- Draw elevations of your chosen plants
- Be familiar with using scale and aspect for more accurate plans
- Make appropriate planting choices for different planting conditions
- Have a basic understanding of scale and aspect to help plan your schemes
- Understand the the processes involved in choosing a tree
- Be aware of different pot sizes and compost types.

Please bring a sketchbook to record visual ideas and/or notebook to take notes. A circle guide and scale rule of your own would be highly recommended. These are available in graphics shops, descent art suppliers or online. All other materials will be provided.

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers.
