Entry requirements & how to apply
Minimum UK requirements 2:1
2:1 honours in history, politics or a relevant discipline, eg public policy, law or social science. Evidence of achievement of an academic level comparable to at least 2:1 honours through past studies, and where previous study, work or experience (eg in government or NGO service) has made the applicant a suitable candidate, will also be considered.
In order to meet the academic entry requirements for this programme you should have a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree with a final mark of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme. If you are still studying you should be achieving an average of at least 60% or above in the UK marking scheme.

Application procedure
Applications must be made online using King’s online application portal apply.kcl.ac.uk and a non-refundable application fee of £60 applies.
Your application will be assessed by an admissions tutor. We aim to process all applications within four to six weeks once all documentation has been received (including references). We may invite candidates for interview if their qualifications are non-standard.

Course programme
Course detail Description
You are required to take modules on the Evolution of British Government and British Political History since 1945, as well as choosing from a range of optional modules.
You are given the opportunity to experience the Department of Political Economy’s work with policymakers and politicians through History & Policy, as well as regular research seminars, conferences and other events which you can attend.
Course format and assessment
Teaching
You will typically have 20 hours per 20-credit taught module, as well as 180 hours of self-study. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.
For the dissertation module, you will have 8 hours of dissertation supervision to complement the 592 hours of self-study.
Assessment
Most 20-credit modules are assessed by a 5,000-word essay, however assessment patterns may vary across modules. The dissertation module is assessed by a 15,000-word dissertation.

Year 1
Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling 180 credits.
Required ModulesYou are required to take the following modules:

- The Evolution of British Government since 1945 (20 credits)
- Contemporary History in Practice (20 credits)
- Dissertation (60 credits)
In addition, you are required to take 60 credits from a range of optional modules that may typically include:
- Anglo-American Relations since 1945 (20 credits)
- The Armed Forces, State & Society 1815 to the present (20 credits)
- The Blair Years (20 credits)
- Democracy in the United Kingdom (20 credits)
- Contemporary British Monarchy (20 credits)
- Election Campaigning, Public Opinion & Politics in Britain 1945-2010 (20 credits)
- No.10, The Cabinet and UK Central Government: Leadership and Coordination (20 credits)
- Parties, Voters & Political Culture in Britain 1945-2000 (20 credits)
- The Treasury and an Introduction to Economic History- in Partnership with HM Treasury (20 credits)
- Welfare & the State in Britain since 1945 (20 credits)
- Students may take a maximum of 40 optional credits from level 7 modules outside of their programme’s approved module list, subject to approval by the programme director.
- Students may take an additional non-assessed 20 credit language module in addition to the required 180 credits.
If you are taking the part-time course, you will usually take 60 credits of required modules, alongside 20 credits of optional modules during your first year and take the remaining credits and your dissertation in your second year, although this can be individually discussed with the student.
