Professional music making, from concept to completion, is the focus of this Popular Music course. You’ll be supported with weekly individual lessons on your primary instrument, specialist workshops, and lectures on every aspect of current practice in the music industry.

We have established a network of industry links with top recording studios and regional festivals; you’ll learn from and collaborate with experienced professionals. We’ll help you graduate as a versatile musician with strong business skills.

You’ll be encouraged to develop versatility, for example, through composing for string quartets or brass bands, and your technical skills will be developed in a wide variety of instrumental and vocal contexts. You’ll gain an understanding of key concepts in the perception of music and sound, developing your ear and musicality. You’ll also develop a thorough knowledge of live sound, music production and marketing, gaining key business skills such as events management, contractual consideration and finance.

About this course

You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of the whole process of professional music making, from the initial songwriting/composing, arranging and rehearsals to performance, recording, post-production and marketing. All strands of the course are taught through practical activity to encourage a thorough understanding of industry practices.

Offers are usually made on the basis of a minimum of MMP/CDD or equivalent, preferably in a related area such as the BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Performance or A Level in Music. Applications from those studying only two A-levels or alternative qualifications will be considered on an individual basis. You’ll be required to submit an audio portfolio of work.

Course programme

· Year 1
Cover a wide variety of performance techniques, supported by session musicians and individual instrument tuition. We introduce you to studio production, alongside developing your understanding of the theoretical and cultural underpinnings of popular music.

· Year 2
Cover live performance, live sound and events management, composing and arranging, and production and marketing. You’ll construct a promotional package featuring your professional recordings and performance experience.

Course assessment

This course is assessed through observed studio and rehearsal practice, performances, essays, portfolios, and presentations.
