The course aims to give students basic knowledge of Portuguese, enabling them to understand how the language works and to start communicating in Portuguese in various situations.This course is suitable if you already speak a Romance language such as French, Italian, Romanian or Spanish. It might also be suitable if you would like to learn at a much faster pace. This course, together with module 2 and module 3 covers year one and two ('Portuguese 1' and 'Portuguese 2 lower'). Expect more homework than in other courses. The tutor will advise on course book in first lesson. Please note that our tutors can be from any Portuguese-speaking county.

The course is based on the tutor's own materials but you might want to purchase a book + CD for home study. Please ask the tutor.
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Course programme
Topics: greetings and introductions, alphabet and spelling, the numbers, the time, talking about yourselves and family, at the cafe, at the hotel
Grammar: verbs to be, to have, to go, present and near future tenses, regular and irregular conjugation of the verbs, colloquial and formal language
The students will have the opportunity to develop their oral, listening comprehension, reading and writing skills.
