Post Graduate Certificate in Education Post 14 (Education and Training) Overview

This is a two-year part-time course in association with the University of Derby, intended for full and part-time teachers and trainers in the lifelong learning sector. This qualification is a requirement for gaining the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. Please note that the qualification gained at the end of this programme is for teachers in the lifelong learning sector; it is not a qualification for the school sector.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to attend an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and other related issues.

You will also need:

  • A relevant undergraduate honours degree in the area you wish to teach, with a minimum of a 2:2 profile.
  • GCSE English language and maths at grade C or above: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements to complete the course.
  • To have a confirmed teaching commitment of at least 50 hours per year, as this is an in-service course.

Please note: You may start this course without maths at Level 2, but must complete this prior to progressing to the second year of study. You will not be able to start the course without English at Level 2.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

This is a two-year part-time course requiring weekly attendance on one evening for the first year, and to be confirmed with the cohort for the second year. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and study outside the classroom.

Assessment methods are varied and may include portfolio/teaching file, academic posters, essays, reports, observations and a reflective journal.

  • Theories and Principles of Educational Practice
  • Curriculum in Context
  • Subject specialist practice and CPD
  • Optional modules include Research Project: the Inquiring Professional; Promoting and Maintaining Behaviour for Learning

Module titles may change.

What can I go on to study?

  • On successful completion, you may wish to apply to study a Master's degree. The University of Derby offers an MA Education programme with multiple pathways, or you may consider other Masters programmes at other institutions.
  • Alternatively, you may seek employment in a wide variety of teaching or training roles within the public, private or voluntary sector.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification is worth 40 credits at Level 7.
