This ceramics course will enable you to develop your skills to enable you to work more independently. The range of
projects will include hand building and throwing, developing decoration and glazing skills.

About this course

Beginners:
- Develop ideas in sketchbooks
- Use clay decorating slips
- Use various hand building techniques such as slab building
- Make functional objects
- Develop skills for decoration and glazing

Intermediate/Advanced:
- Set a brief in discussion with the tutor to enable you to work independently
- Further develop personal ideas and approaches.

Course programme

Ideas will be developed through sketchbooks in relation to three-dimensional form, colour, texture, mark making and
imagery. You will be encouraged to gain inspiration by doing visual research.

Through group and individual tuition and demonstrations. Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee.There is a charge of £2.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £17.50 per bag/ £8.75 per half bag. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, City Lit students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. You will get feedback from your tutor which on which courses to progress. Within City Lit you could progress onto the City Lit Ceramics course- VR710, the Ceramics Portfolio Course-VR711 or the Diploma Course in Ceramics-VR712, all of which are structured courses that can lead to higher education or independent studio practice.
