Description of the Course
The intention is to provide an intensive course at level 2. The curriculum will be designed for students who will be studying both the social and the natural sciences and will provide a sound foundation in the required skills.The Pre-Access course is designed to allow mature students, who have few formal qualifications, to develop the skills required for advanced study. In addition the pattern of delivery will enable students in employment to re-arrange their working hours and study without ceasing work altogether. All students will study Basic Skills as a foundation for future study / IT and accreditation for Word-Processing skills will be available
Course content
The programme areas and assessment tasks have been chosen with the intention of developing the skills required for study on an Access course and in Higher Education. The assessment methods will ensure that the skills are achieved at least at level 2 and individual subject teachers will be responsible for the relevant assessment judgements. Experience suggests that the majority of applicants will be interested in progression to Nursing or a related area. However, there is evidence of interest from applicants who wish to progress to other areas and options have been included in the programme which will develop a wide range of Basic Skills through the Adult Award. Areas to be covered are: Adult Award- Basic Skills / Introduction to Sociology - Psychology- Science
Assessment
The admissions procedure will be similar to that used for the Access to HE programme and applicants will be invited for an interview and diagnostic assessment. The assessment will consist of numeracy and communications exercises and students who score more than 50% in numeracy and 80% in communication will be advised to consider direct progression to the Access programme. Suitability for Pre-Access will be judged from both the test scores and from the interview process.
Who is the course for?
Recent recruitment patterns to our Access to HE programme suggest that a large number of applicants have the potential to do well in HE, but lack the skills base necessary for immediate progression to an Access course. This is particularly true of applicants to the Nursing pathway who are responding to government initiatives and hoping to progress from care work to RGN status. In many cases these students are in work and have been out of education for some time. a.) Students who have a clear desire to progress to Higher Education but who currently lack the level of skill required for success on an Access Course
Entry requirements
Pre-entry guidance and counselling is seen as an essential entitlement for all students. Many Pre-Access students will have applied for the Access to HE programme and will have been advised of the need for further academic preparation. Other candidates will have applied directly and applications are anticipated from students on Fresh Start and Return to Study programmes. Students will not be expected to have prior qualifications but the interview process and diagnostic assessment scores must provide evidence of a potential to achieve successfully at least at level 3.
What can I do after this course?
Having completed the Pre-Access course, students can progress to an ACCESS Programme or BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care or other Level 3 Programmes
