About this course
Applicants will need three GCSEs at Grade C or above (including Maths and Science) to start directly on this course.However, with at least 3 GCSE's at Grade D applicants would start on the Pre-Apprenticeship at Level 1 and then progress onto this course.Mature learners returning to Further Education would be accepted subject to a successful interview.

What are the Entry Requirements?
Applicants should have, or expect to gain, a minimum of three GCSEs (incl. Maths and Science) at Grade D or above.
With three GCSE's at Grade C or better you could start on the Pre-Apprenticeship Level 2 Mechanical Maintenance course.
What will I Learn?
Areas of study include:
NVQ1 Performing Engineering Operations (Practical) with the following units:
- Making Mechanical Components Using Hand Tools
- Engineering Machining
- Working Safely in an Engineering Environment
- Working Efficiently and Effectively in Engineering
- Using and Communicating Technical Information
Foundation Certificate in Engineering with the following units:
- Mathematics in Engineering
- Mechanical Science
- Working Safely in Engineering Environments
- Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance
- Understanding Machining and Materials
Learners will also study Functional Skills in IT, Communication & Application of Number.
How will I Learn?
The course is mostly practical work and is carried out in the workshops at the ETEC Centre. The ETEC facility is equipped with extensive mechanical and IT resources.
Work consists of a series of practical tasks with underpinning knowledge, ensuring that a range of necessary skills are developed throughout the course.
Please note, learners must provide overalls and protective footwear (not trainers) for the workshop, along with standard stationery equipment.
How will I be Assessed?
The practical tasks that are part of this course will be tracked and built into a portfolio of evidence. Underpinning knowledge will be assessed with written and oral questioning. There will be tests, online and multi-choice, as part of the Foundation Certificate and Functional Skills elements of this course.
What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits do not form a part of this course but learners are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities.
Is there any Work Experience?
The timetable allows for some industrial placement / work experience every week, subject to availability.
What can I Progress to?
Our aim is to get all learners who are success2ful on this course onto an Apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance.
Learners who successfully complete this course and have not gained employment will be offered a place on the second year course, which is the Pre-Apprenticeship Level 2 Mechanical Maintenance.

Previous learners have successfully gained employment within the industry and progressed onto higher level qualifications.
Female participation is encouraged on all Engineering courses
