PRINCE2® Foundation & Practitioner Training

Introduction

The Knowledge Academy PRINCE2® classroom training course lasts 5 days and will prepare you to successfully pass the PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner exams. The course is fully BCS-accredited and includes both exams.

PRINCE2® is a valuable qualification for anybody looking to be involved in project management. Passing PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to be part of a successful PRINCE2® project management team.

Pre-Course Reading

There are some exercises that it is recommended you complete before starting the course. These are:

• Reading 3 chapters from the official PRINCE2® manual, “Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2®”
• Completing a pre-course workbook
• 70 multiple choice questions designed to test PRINCE2® knowledge

This course is open to everyone and there are no prerequisites.

• Five days, with a two-part structure
• In the first three days, you will prepare for and take the Foundation exam
• The remaining two days will be to prepare for and take the Practitioner exam

PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner Examinations

Foundation exam:

• Focuses on knowledge of PRINCE2®
• Multiple choice
• 75 questions
• 1 hour
• Pass mark is 50%

Practitioner exam:

• Focuses on ability to apply PRINCE2® to an example scenario
• Objective testing, a type of multiple choice
• 8 questions, 10 items per question
• Two-and-a-half hours
• Pass mark is 55%

What is PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a process-based methodology for project management. Because it is generic, it is flexible enough to be tailored to any project or any organisation, and because it is a best practice solution, it has been proven to work.

PRINCE2® is managed by AXELOS, a leading worldwide best practice methodology provider. It is used extensively by the UK government, as well as in private businesses such as the telecommunications company Orange.

Case Study

PRINCE2® has been successfully used in a project to expand the port of Rotterdam.

In the 2000s, the port of Rotterdam was one of the busiest ports in the world and was running out of space. The answer was to expand the port outwards towards the North Sea, in a project called “Maasvlakte 2”.

A project management consultancy called Ambition Group, led by Dr Richard Moret, recommended PRINCE2 as a method of managing the project, but the board were unsuitable of its suitability for a project of Maasvlakte’s size. The Project Director decided to test PRINCE2 by using it in the first stage of the project: the project initiation.

Initially, PRINCE2® was met by resistance from those staff who felt they already knew how to do project management. By meeting with them weekly and working with them closely, Dr Moret managed to smoothly introduce PRINCE2, and everyone quickly started to understand the benefits of PRINCE2.

By the end of the project in 2012, everyone involved was fully supportive of PRINCE2®, and it was used to manage the entire project. The project was delivered on time and within budget thanks to the rigorous governance provided by the PRINCE2® methodology.
