Why should I come to Pendleton College?
The Art and Design Department boasts good resources which include large spacious rooms to work in and a model-making workshop. The Product Design course has very close links to the Graphic Products GCSE.

What will I study?
Year One (AS Level) students will study the following: Unit 1 - Portfolio of Creative Skills: In this unit students are given the opportunity to develop their creative, technical and practical skills through a series of
  • product investigations
  • design activities
  • manufacturing activities
Graphic Products has two clearly defined pathways, either 'conceptual design' or 'the built environment'. Unit 2 - Designing for the Future: In this unit students will develop a knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and processes used in the field of design and technology. Students will also learn about industrial and commercial practices and the importance of quality checks and the health and safety issues that have to be considered at all times. Year Two (A2 Level) Students will study the following: Unit 3 - Designing for the Future In this unit, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices and contemporary design issues. Unit 4 - Commercial Design In this unit students are given the opportunity to design and make a commercial product of their choice that complies with the requirements of a graphics project - 'conceptual design' or 'the built environment'. The topic of the project must contain a 2D and 3D element. A range of modelling materials must be used to realise the final design.

What will I achieve?
Students can progress to both art and technology based courses at university depending on their other A-Levels. Courses include: Art Foundation, Product Design, Automotive Design, Interior Design, Graphics Design, Architecture and a variety of Engineering Degrees including Computer Aided Design.

How is the course assessed?
Assessment is by coursework and written exam papers.

What else will I do?
Students are positively encouraged to make full use of the art and design studios when not in class to develop their portfolios of work. Visits have included trips to London and other centres of design, industrial visits to Kellogg's Wrexham & Jaguar Halewood, visits to designer shows and links with universities for materials testing and design master classes. We encourage students to apply for the Arkwright Scholarship who are studying Maths, Physics and Product Design. Its aim is to encourage the most talented of young people to consider a career in the field of design and engineering.
