BTEC National Production Arts

WHY TAKE PRODUCTION ARTS?
BTEC Production Arts gives students the groundwork needed to progress onto a degree or career in the backstage elements of theatre. It is a practical and portfolio based course designed for students who want to learn about the stage management, technical, construction and design elements of theatre.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
Over the two years you will explore core units including: Assistant Stage Manager, Production for Theatre Performance, Performing Arts Production Workshop and Performing Arts Production Planning. Other specialist units that you will study include Stage Lighting Operations, Prop Making and Scenic Construction for the stage, to name but a few. The first year of the course focuses on key areas of Stage Management and in the second year you will explore a wider range of skills.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
No previous experience of theatre is necessary to take Production Arts, although an interest in theatre production is desirable. Many students who choose to take Production Arts have experience assisting back stage on school productions - this is an opportunity to develop and train those skills.

You will develop a range of expertise such as marking the book, prop sourcing skills, the ability to rig, focus and operate stage lighting and prop and scenic construction. You will even learn how to build and operate puppets!

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Through practical assessments and portfolio evidence; you will be assessed on pre-production tasks, your work during live shows and any props or set that you build will also be used as proof of your learning. You will keep a written portfolio of evidence.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
You will be expected to support numerous evening performances as part of your course assessment as well as attend out of hours rehearsals. You can also attend the numerous theatre visits that will be running throughout the year. There may also be the opportunity for you to support performances by the College's Performing Arts enrichment groups.
