Course Content

Why you should attend this seminar
This course reviews how the professional conduct regime for solicitors has changed since the introduction of The Solicitors Code of Conduct in July 2007. It also considers the effect of the Legal Services Act 2007,
and other mooted proposals for change, upon professional responsibilities and the regulatory regime that applies to solicitors’
firms.

Programme includes

  • Background to The Code of Conduct
  • Recap on the key differences between the old and new rules
  • The key provisions of the Code including Rules 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 & 9
  • Costs estimates - the cases of Mastercigars Direct Limited v Withers LLP and Reynolds v Stone Rowe Brewer.
  • Risk/benefit ratio – the recent cases of Sims v Hawkins and the George Michael lookalike case
  • “Entity-based” regulation under The Legal Services Act 2007
  • The role of information barriers and the planned consultation on changes to the rules on Conflict of Interests and Confidentiality
  • The Solicitors’ Recognised Bodies Regulations 2009

3 CPD hours.

This course can help contribute towards the training requirements of the SRA for Management Course Stage 2 and Rule 5 for solicitors wishing to be “qualified to supervise.” Rule 5 of the Code requires solicitors wishing to be “qualified to supervise” to undertake 12 hours of management skills training.
