Why choose this course? The University of Bolton is one of the largest providers of teacher education for further and higher education in the UK. We have a diverse team of teacher educators who are highly qualified subject specialists, with a wealth of experience of teaching both in the post-compulsory sector and teacher education. We are involved in a number of national and international research and teacher education projects. This course is the first step towards QTLS (Qualified Teacher for Learning and Skills). From April 2012 this has equivalence with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) which is required for teaching in the secondary sector. What you will learn

The course will equip you to be an effective teacher in the classroom, as well as providing you with the skills and knowledge to work in the FE and Skills sector of education.

Teaching placements are arranged for you in situations which meet the requirements for becoming a qualified teacher in the FE and Skills sector.

What you will study

The syllabus you follow will depend on the pathway and specialism you choose. If you wish to teach a curriculum or vocational subject in which you are already qualified, for instance art and design, business and legal studies, health and childhood studies, humanities, language and communications, maths and science or technology, you should apply for the Generic pathway.

Alternatively, if you are looking to teach in the Skills for Life sector you have a choice of English (Literacy/ESOL) or Mathematics (Numeracy).

If you specifically wish to teach learners with additional needs you should apply for the Teaching Learners with Additional Needs (TLAN) pathway.

Additional information

Careers & professional development These courses prepare you for a teaching career in the FE and Skills sector. Professional recognition The PGCE 14+ programmes meet the requirement of the FE-specific Diploma in Education and Training (DET). All new FE teachers must complete a teacher training qualification as the first step in obtaining QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills). The course does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) to teach in schools.
