  • the course is very thorough and Sam tailored it to modern trends and talked about her own experiences - I found this really useful because I was a bit scared of difficult client scenarios.Regarding the center, I must say that the assessment part is really good. I got a chance to revise what I had learnt and also, although it wasn't very pressurised, I did feel the pressure because I knew my work was being watched and assessed. This was good because that is the same feeling you get when you have your client - they too will give you their verdict of what they think of your work. So after the course I felt really prepared.

  • After learning how to do my own make-up from Sam I realised I had a real interest in make-up and decided to look into being a make-up artist. As I feel confident in her teaching I decided to take this course, and I am so pleased that I did! I really liked the level of detail and also the amount of practice I got during the training. I thought that I would end up with the skills but would need more time afterwards to feel confident enough to do other peoples make-up but Sam was really encouraging and the amount of practice I have had during the course means that I do feel ready. In fact I had my first client a week ago - scary but loved it! I am due to take the hair styling course later this month as I want to work as a freelancer for weddings and special occasions, am really looking forward to it. The professional picture that Sam sent me of my work was a really good stepping stone for me to be able to get my first client as I had an image of my work. I couldn't believe I had done it myself! I found the assessment really useful because I was able to revise what I had learnt but also, it gave me a taste of the feeling of doing a real client, which made me feel a lot more confident when I had my first real one. I looked at other courses but they only give you a certificate for attending the course, not from an assessment, and I have found that people are more confident to go with me as their make-up artist even though I am new to it, when I tell them that I have been assessed.

What could be improved: I didn't enjoy the eyes part - I have always felt uncomfortable touching my own eyes or other peoples but Sam showed me different techniques to overcome my anxieties.

Course programme

This course is suited to the beginner with no experience as a make-up artist, there are no pre-requisites for this course - just your passion! We will cover all aspects of professional make-up applications for occasions, fashion and professional photographs. This means that you will be armed with the skills to work as a make-up artist on almost any project - whether it is for a bride, a catwalk or photoshoot. The course starts from the basics right up to the advanced skills which enable you to start your career as a make-up artist immedeately. If you would like to learn in stages, you are welcome to take our Foundation and Advanced certificates instead of this whole course. To help you kick start your career, we will give you: - professional brush set which is approved by NVQ standards - airbrushed photo of your work so that you can start building your portfolio - Professional Make-Up Artist Manual Since being a make-up artist without hair skills limits you in work you can undertake, most of our students also enrol in our Professional Hair Styling course. To help you start your business as a freelancer, you may also find our Setting Up & Running Your Freelance Business course useful.
