What will you study on the BSc Professional Practice in Advanced Pilot Aviation?

The programme is designed to recognise and develop higher-level professional learning that takes place in the context of work undertaken as a commercial airline pilot and integrates required and key aspects of this professional role. Those undertaking the course will be required to reflect on their professional learning as a source of evidence of meeting programme and module learning outcomes. For example, sources of evidence of higher-level professional learning will include the Recurrent Review, Voyage Reports, Air Safety Reports, Safety and Emergency Procedures, Crew and Resources Management. Many aspects of the programme are negotiable to enable it to reflect the specific context of an individual's professional pilot practice. The programme is designed to enable professional pilots to develop a claim for recognition of their prior learning and thus to gain academic credit that can count towards the degree.

The Review of Learning module will provide an introduction to reflective practice and higher-level work-based learning. The module will also support the development of a claim for prior professional learning up to 240 academic credits at levels 4 and level 5.

This module runs throughout the programme and is designed to support the gathering of evidence of ongoing professional development.

This module will capture the professional learning from the CAA/EASA required Recurrent Review.

This module requires professional pilots to identify a project proposal for an area of your own or others' practice that can be improved and will support the development of appropriate methods of inquiry as a basis for thinking about the kind of improvement that might be made. The module will also support the development of appropriate approaches to designing and planning the final Advanced Pilot Aviation Project.

This module will have a key role in reinforcing the professional knowledge, understanding, skills and values required for Advanced Pilot Aviation Practice. It will represent a negotiated project or other activity that is specifically designed to enhance an identified area of Advanced Pilot Aviation Practice.

Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
