Sometimes the actions, jargon and plans of project managers confuse those who interact with them. A better understanding of the subject allows those who interact with projects to ensure that they get the right outcome from that project. The aim of this course is to provide such an understanding, through updated knowledge.

While it is not intended to make project managers out of those that aren''t, it will provide an insight into the key elements and methods of project management, enabling participants to make better use of their relationship with project staff.
This course helps learners to:
  • Understand the basic principles of projects and their management
  • Comprehend the key ingredients for projects to succeed
  • Recognise common project management terminology
  • Communicate more effectively with project managers and teams
  • Recognise key components of project management methodologies
  • Understand their role within projects
Initially, participants are involved in a simple project to introduce themselves and the facilitator. This highlights the issues involved in running a project and is used as a reference point throughout the course.
  • Projects and their management - This session will clarify what is and what is not a project. A working definition of project is introduced and participants examine their own projects to check that they fit
  • Ingredients for success - The group will examine some well known failed projects, add experiences of their own and explore established theory to create a list of success ingredients
  • The project manager''s role - This session will define the role of the project manager. Job descriptions will be introduced and discussed and the responsibilities of a project manager defined. The group will also be introduced to the key ''rights'' a project manager must have in order to be responsible for the project''s success
  • Terms, tools and techniques - Here participants will be introduced to the meaning of the terms, the purpose of the tools and how they are used. The session is designed to help you understand the tools of project management, not to enable you to use the tools
  • Methodologies - A methodical approach to project management is a good thing. In the past few years a number of project management methodologies have appeared. This session will highlight what is available, explain the key features and help you to decide if a methodology can be of any use to you

The group will review the course, address any outstanding issues and take time to look at how they will use their learning.
