Course programme

MSc Psychological Approaches to Health and Management
Mode: part-time

Increasingly professionals within the health services are faced with complex challenges in their work, which requires specialist knowledge of psychological aspects that rise to these challenges and solutions to their management.

This course is designed to meet a growing skills gap in the National Health Service (NHS) and is consistent with NHS (e.g. Improving working lives) and modernisation of particular services (mental health and primary care) within it.

An understanding of psychological approaches to the specialist management of health will be required to ensure you are able to make effective decisions in these roles.

The course focuses on professional skills, the role of stress in the development of illnesses, the impact of personality and life style variables on health and illnesses, mental health and links with other areas such as human resource and management, psychological testing in occupation and health, anthropology and occupational health.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of supervised research in the field of psychology, health, occupational health and human resources.

Two of the modules you will study allow you to specialise, which will enhance your practice or area of research. For example, human resources management modules prepare you for managerial roles, where as mental health in primary care modules would enable you to undertake a position within the primary care field.

Additionally you could take an Independent Psychological Research module to up date your knowledge in psychology. This is especially recommended if you start the course in February.

You are encouraged to take the module called Psychological Testing, which will enable you to use psychological testing (e.g. aptitude tests) for research and occupational assessment.

The course consists of 8 taught modules and a dissertation. You will be expected to complete all of the Autumn semester modules and 4 out of 5 modules from the Spring semester. January starters will also be required to complete 4 modules in each semester except that their first semester will be in the Spring.

Why choose this course?

  • We have excellent links with local healthcare providers for research and work experience
  • The course offers a unique combination of topics in health, psychological assessment and human resource management
  • You will have the opportunity to apply for a certificate of Occupational Testing (level A)

Career Opportunities

Significantly enhances career opportunities (e.g. managerial roles) and gives you the opportunity to apply for a certificate of Occupational Testing (level A).

This course offers the opportunity for career and managerial skills enhancement by developing psychological and managerial skills especially in relation to human resources in practice and also in research.

Typically graduates would expect to get either promotion towards more responsible roles or have an opportunity to be recruited in primary care services especially in relation to mental health.

Assessment

Assessment consists of coursework (e.g. critical review, portfolio, essays and a research report), exams, presentations, practical work, logbook and dissertation.

Dissertation/project and research

The dissertation gives an opportunity to carry out a substantial piece of research in the field of health, occupational health psychology and HRM.

The research process can be followed from start to finish allowing you to utilise knowledge and skills gained in other modules, in particular Research Methods in Health Psychology and Psychological Assessment and/or Independent Psychological Research modules.

Two supervisors will usually be allocated to each student to allow for a consistency in cover across the Academic Year (or for the two years if following the part time option).

Attendance

There are no taught modules during the Summer semester for any group, but dissertations are expected to progress during the summer. Attendance mode is one day for part-time students (Thursday for the first year and Wednesday for the second year).
