This course runs in 2016/17.

Psychology is the study of approaches that explain people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Criminology is the study of why certain behaviours are criminalised and what predicts these behaviours. This course draws from both disciplines to further your understanding of crime and criminals.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Unlike many degree programmes where two subjects are combined, the Psychology and Criminology course at Coventry will give you the opportunity to combine the two areas of study in many sessions rather than studying them as separate subjects.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

• Currently accredited by from the British Psychological Society (BPS) meaning that as a graduate, providing that you achieve at least a 2:2, you will be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC);
• the opportunity to go on field trips to Amsterdam, San Francisco, and Tokyo;

• the opportunity to apply to work with staff on research projects, as a student research assistant;
• the opportunity to take a work experience module, which will give you valuable work experience, develop new skills and increase your appeal to potential employers;
• guest lectures by experts including practising psychologists and criminologists and researchers in both criminology and psychology.

• the opportunity to join the Psychology Society. This is a group run by students in collaboration with staff. Events are largely social by nature but with an academic twist;
• the chance to apply for a year of work placement which would entitle you to the degree of BSc (Hons) Psychology and Criminology with enhancement year;

• there is also the option to take a year out of the degree to study abroad on the Erasmus programme.

Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditor's standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will spend a significant proportion of your first two years studying the key areas of psychology and criminology including: biological psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, individual differences and criminology.

In years one and two, you will learn about research methods and the statistical analyses that researchers use. By your final year, you will have been taught how to design and conduct your own research. You will then do this and analyse and present your results in the form of an independent project in the area of psychology and criminology.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars and workshop practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 30%; practical or project work 30%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical teaching week you will have a minimum of 14 contact hours of study (classroom, online etc) and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial each week

Medium group teaching: 5 hours of workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week

On top of this, you are also expected to spend 25.5 hours each week studying and revising in your own time. There is also the option to make appointments with tutors in their available office hour
