Aim This course will enable you to develop an understanding of the scope and nature of psychology as a science. Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour and during the course you will apply a range of psychological approaches to explain behaviour in everyday life.
Content Year 1 - AS level
Unit 1:
· Cognitive psychology - Memory, including models of memory and memory in everyday life e.g. eye witness testimony
· Development psychology - Early social development, including attachment theory and the impact of day care.
· Research methods.
Unit 2:
· Biological psychology - Stress, including stress as a bodily response and stress in everyday life e.g. effect of life changes
· Social psychology - Social influence, including conformity, obedience and independent behaviour
· Individual differences - Psychopathology, including definitions of abnormality, explanations and treatments.
Assessment will be in the form of two written papers lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes each.
Year 2 - A level
Unit 3:
· Topics in psychology - This enables students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills of analysis relating to distinct topics. These are likely to be biological rhythms and sleep, eating behaviour and relationships.
Assessed by a 1 hour 30 minute written exam.
Unit 4:
· Psychopathology, Psychology in Action and Research Methods - This includes an in depth study of one disorder e.g. schizophrenia. A detailed investigation of a contemporary application e.g. media psychology. Psychological research and scientific method.
Assessed by a 2 hour written exam.
Extra Information
Psychology compliments a range of subjects from both natural sciences and humanities.
Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
