Public Services (Uniformed) National Award
The BTEC Award is a full time, practical, work-related course which runs over the period of one year. It is aimed at students wishing to pursue a career in any uniformed public service, e.g. the police, the ambulance service, any branch of the military, fire service and prison service.

What does the course involve?
This course is for those who enjoy activity and who are willing to try new experiences; there is emphasis on outdoor pursuits and sporting activities. Students will develop a wide range of work-transferable skills including time management, team work, leadership and communication. Individuals can be seen to develop their self confidence and personal effectiveness during their time with us, growing in maturity and becoming effective young adults.

Students will have numerous opportunities to go on residential visits and be involved in a wide range of careers trips as well as receiving some excellent talks from visiting speakers. Any student interested in this course must to be willing to participate in activity-based exercises and trips; these include mountain walking, navigation, camping, camp craft, rock climbing, kayaking and a residential expedition. Students will also investigate the entry requirement levels of the uniformed public services, their assessment procedures and the level of physical fitness required. The classroom-based work will relate to outdoor activities throughout the course, although several of the units are academic in nature (such as Leadership and Citizenship).

Assessment during the course is through assignment-based work and the observation of practical demonstrations and activities - there are no exams within the BTEC. The assignments will have deadlines for completion and a strong emphasis is placed upon compliance with these deadlines. As part of the course students will have the choice, depending on which other subjects they have taken, to access a range of additional subjects. These subjects are the Community Sports Leadership Award, Drugs Awareness, the Basic Expedition Award and a first aid.

Some equipment, transport, food, insurance, instructors and all the trips on offer, as well as careers trips, guest speakers, outdoor pursuits, the expedition and a course T-shirt.
