Real estate managers advise on property matters, especially regarding investment, acquisitions and disposals and management decisions, helping owners, tenants and investors value their assets.
You will study the knowledge that real estate managers need: valuations, investment, law, economics, corporate strategy, finance, and social and environmental agendas. You will also develop skills for work through our Business Readiness Programme such as: presenting yourself; teamwork; writing reports; debating; applying IT; initiating and executing research projects. Work placements, field trips, research projects and professional qualifications will complement your academic learning.
Year 1 gives context to the discipline of estate management. You will study the valuation and appraisal of assets, building technology and the legal and economic principles governing real estate. You will take your first field trip to a major city. A recent trip to the City of London where 122 Leadenhall St (The Cheese Grater), a building from renowned architect Richard Rogers was visited. This was embedded in a real case scenario move of an HQ into a prominent EC3 building. Students also visited the City of London Model (Marketing Suite).
Year 2 extends your knowledge of valuation across different contexts. You will study the law of landlord and tenant, the UK planning system, and commercial real estate management principles. You will also take a short (normally residential) field trip to a major city. Recent trips include Dublin culminating in a group development project.
Towards the end of the second year you will undertake your business experience.
Year 3/4 deepens your studies in investment strategy and valuation and asset management, and extends your knowledge of professional practice, including law and ethics. A coursework assignment culminating in a major group project and an independent research project is also a significant feature.
