Course programme

This course looks at a number of Western and Eastern philosophical, ethical and religious traditions. The first year focuses on the question of what it means to say that an action is right or wrong, as well as introducing the main principles of Buddhism and Eastern philosophy.

The second year examines the relationship between religion and human experience, exploring the role religion plays in contemporary society, its visual representation and the challenges that face religion. Eastern religious beliefs and practices will be treated in more detail.

  • You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
  • In addition, you must have achieved at least a grade B and a grade C in at least two written subjects, e.g. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business, Religious Studies or English Language.

International students:

  • Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
  • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

Assessment is by coursework and by end of year exams. Successful completion of the first year gains you an AS Level in Religious Studies. Completion of the second gains you an A Level in Religious Studies.

This course should be considered as analytical training for further study. Paired with a complementary A Level like Philosophy or even Politics, it can be a stepping stone to acceptance on a Degree course studying Religion, Philosophy or even History.
