Paid work experience for students in Essex with learning difficulties and disabilities.

Realistic Opportunities for Supported Employment (ROSE) helps people over 25 with learning difficulties and disabilities get the most out of paid work placements. The programme recognises that most people with learning difficulties see paid employment as one of their main goals in adult life. The benefits are much more than financial and include building social skills, self-esteem, confidence and independence.

Course programme

The Traffic Light support system:

Job coaches use the Traffic Light system at the monthly assessments, with levels of support gradually decreasing when the time is right. Here's an example of how the system is used to recommend varying support levels.

Red - The Job Coach stays with the student constantly. They provide support on a one-to-one basis and complete Session Review Sheets.

Orange - The Job Coach is with the student for half of the working shift and completes Monthly Review Sheets.

Green - The Job Coach visits the employer and student every week for four weeks. This reduces to visits every three months for up to one year, to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Course Assessment Method

We assess students individually every month so they have full control of their progress.

Students also come to college one day a week, for 20 weeks, to study an English and maths NCFE qualification. The focus here is on work preparation.

Work placement support:

ROSE funded job coaches guide them through the application and interview process, to help students find their choice of work. We help match individual skills and interests with vacancies for paid employment.

Once students start work, their job coach will visit regularly to provide individual support. We encourage independence, where it's appropriate, and help students achieve their own goals through an Individual Learning Plan. The Job Coach will initially work the same hours as the student. Monthly assessments check students are developing in their job. The support gradually decreases when everyone feels the time is right. We complete three monthly Economic Wellbeing Reviews once a student is working independently. Job coaches also work very closely with employers. This ensures the employer is happy with the how the student is completing their tasks before moving to the next stage of the support system.
