The sale and use of ‘professional use’ rodenticides is changing and from March 2016 there will be restrictions on who can purchase and use these products. These changes are being implemented under the UK’s ‘Rodenticide Stewardship Scheme’. There will be significant changes to the labelling of these products and it is essential that users understand the implications of these changes. It will become a requirement for professional users to either hold one of the CRRU-approved ‘Certificates of Competence’ or to work for a farm in a CRRU- approved ‘Farm Assurance Scheme’. The RSPH Level 2 Award in ‘The Safe Use of Rodenticides’ will qualify the holder to meet the needs of these new requirements.

The course will cover the following subjects:

  • Understand the Safe Use of Rodenticides

    • Why commensal rodents need to be managed.

    • Identification of commensal rodents and differentiation of these from rodent species not classed as pests.

    • Aspects of the biology and behaviour of commensal rodents that determine their pest status and / or are important for their effective control.

  • How to assess a site prior to implementing measures for the management of commensal rodents

    • How to determine the size and nature of rodent pest activity.

    • Features of the site that contribute to the size and maintenance of rodent pest activity.

  • Methods for the management of commensal rodents

    • The ‘risk hierarchy’ for rodent management techniques.

    • Non-chemical methods for the management of commensal rodents.

    • Chemical methods for the management of commensal rodents.

    • Procedures to be followed after completion of a rodent pest management programme.

  • Requirements for health and safety and record keeping when carrying out rodent management activities

    • Health and safety requirements.

    • Requirements for record keeping.

The day consists of both classroom and practical external demonstrations, so wet weather clothing is required.

Attainment of the Learning Outcomes will be assessed by a multiple-choice examination.

The examination is provided by RSPH Qualifications. This test is taken by the candidates at the end of the training course.

The multiple choice test consists of 25 questions and is of forty minutes duration, which will take place at the end of the course. Candidates must achieve a score of 17/25 in order to pass the assessment.

Entry Criteria & Additional Information

There are no pre requisites for this qualification. Successfully completing and gaining this qualification will become a requirement for purchasing and using ‘professional use’ rodenticides.
