Course overview
IB ab initio Russian includes the study of language, texts, and cultural awareness. It is designed to help you to develop a basic competence and confidence in Russian, using a range of written and recorded material. It focuses on everyday situations and aspects of the culture related to them, and predominantly aims to enable you to be able to communicate in an effective way. Areas of study include:
- Personal information
- Education and work
- Shopping and travel
- Food and drink
- Holidays and travel
- Environment and geography
- Health and emergencies
This course will give you the ability to carry on learning Russian more independently after two years should you wish to do so.
How you will learn
You will learn through class discussions, group and pair work, and activities arising from a variety of source material. You do not need any previous knowledge of Russian, but the willingness and perseverance to learn new vocabulary and grammar rapidly are essential. The Cyrillic alphabet may look daunting, but is not usually a problem for learners of Russian, whereas the strange sound, and sometimes the length, of some words can test a learners determination. Also important in discussion is an open mind. How you will be assessed
External Assessment:Paper 1 (40%): based on four written texts, with a short writing exercise in response to the fourth text.
Paper 2 (30%): one short (minimum 60 words) and one longer (min 120 words) writing task.
Internal Assessment:
Individual oral (15%): based on a presentation linked to one of the course topics.
Interactive oral (15%): in which the mark of one of a series of group oral activities is used.

What students say about the I.B. The I.B. is challenging yet great fun it educates students for success beyond school or college
I think I.B. students are much better prepared for University, as they have good time management skills and really know how to learn
Other useful information
Career options are invariably enhanced for students with language skills and proven language learning ability, even if language proficiency is not a main focus of the work. Relatively few people in the UK study Russian at any level, and thus in addition to being a fascinating subject in itself, it does have a rarity value.
