AIMS
The aims of the course are:
· To gain a better understanding of safeguarding children (child protection)
· To understand and be aware of what is child abuse
· To consider relevant legislation
· To understand what you need to do if :
A young person discloses
Or you are made aware
of a CP issue
· Reflect on your practice
OUTLINE
To achieve these aims participants will consider the following issues relevant to the topic:
Their feelings of abuse (consider the effect of their own values and beliefs)
An understanding of the context (historically and socially)
Knowledge of the key and pertinent legislation
Child harm and significant harm
Types of abuse
Effects of abuse
Truths and myths
Effective and good practice
Signs and symptoms of abuse (including maternal drug misuse and domestic abuse)
Accidental and non-accidental injury
What action to take
The importance of information sharing and communication
Responding to concerns about colleagues behaviour
Reporting (and barriers to reporting)
Responding to a child who discloses
Responding to bullying
Resources and help lines

What to do if Your Worried a Child is Being Abused (2003),
Early Years Foundation Stage Welfare Requirements, Safeguarding and Promoting Children’s Welfare (2008)
Have an awareness of what is meant by Child Abuse or Neglect and learn about the possible signs, symptoms and indicators of abuse or neglect.
Understand what is meant by ‘Child in Need’ and ‘significant harm.’ Under the Children’s act 1989 section 17 and section 47.
Appreciate own role and responsibilities, and those of others in safeguarding. In line with what to do if you’re worried a child is being abused.
Understand how personal/cultural influences inform the assumptions and judgements made about child welfare,
The fact that child abuse occurs in all cultural and religious groupings all ages and educational heritage
Be clear of own role and responsibilities, and those of different agencies and how they
contribute to the safeguarding of children.
Knowing the boundaries of personal competence when to involve others and where to seek advice and support, alleviating personal/professional anxieties, understanding when to consult with a Manager/designated person
Understand how to respond to allegations against persons in a position of trust.
Have a clear understanding of Domestic Abuse issues in relation to Child Protection.
How to respond to child’s disclosure
How to respond to Families and Children where there are Child Protection Concerns.
Understand necessity for information sharing, and accurate record keeping, in line with governing consent of confidentiality.
Know procedures of what to do in the event of insufficient response from other agencies, while maintaining a focus on the welfare of the child or young person.
TEACHING METHODS
The course involves several activities to support the learning and development aspects of this course and will be delivered by a variety of teaching methods including: presentation; small group discussion; whole group discussion; individual work; DVD; case studies and comprehensive handouts.
