This course will explore the notion of 'pilgrimage' through a selected sequence of musical examples, contemporary readings and artworks. We will seek to understand the musical experiences of early pilgrims and assess their observations and records of the musical works they heard. Tutor: Dr Edward Breen [external website].

About this course
- demonstrate familiarity with the notion of pilgrimage- understand broad historical/social/religious significance of the pilgrimage to Santiago- recognise and understand a range of late medieval music including its relationship to plainchant- understand the notion of a ‘Golden Age’ of Spanish music and recognise its main genres and composers.
You will need to bring a pen/pencil and a folder to keep your notes and handouts organised. You may also wish to purchase some of the music books or recordings discussed in class, links to these materials will be available online after each session.
Sessions will comprise combinations of lecture, question-and-answer, quizzes, guided listening, video and manuscript study. You may wish to do extra reading outside class and there will be an informal ‘open book’ quiz at the end of the course. There will also be Spotify and Youtube playlists for this course if you wish to do extra listening.
