Our work is enhanced by a wide range of academic partnerships. Our School consists of three departments: Biological Sciences; Earth and Planetary Sciences: Psychological Sciences. The Department of Biological Sciences is an acknowledged world leader in structural biology and bioinformatics. It was formed in August 2009 through a merger of the former Schools of Biological and Chemical Sciences and Crystallography. The department offers a wide range of innovative courses in biology and chemistry, with flexible entrance requirements. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department was ranked 3rd of all environment and earth science departments in the UK, as part of the joint Research school return with UCL. The department offers a range of exciting courses in geology, earth and planetary sciences. As part of this, it runs a fieldwork programme in the UK and overseas that meets the exacting standards of the Geological Society. The Department of Psychological Sciences provides an active and vibrant research environment which directly informs its teaching. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008), Birkbeck Psychology was ranked 5th in the country for the excellence of its research.Research groups in the Department won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2006.
