About this course
This course is open to mature students who have not previously studied science to an advanced level and to students of 18+ who have not achieved required grades or who wish to change course. While GCSE equivalent passes in English and Maths are normally required, consideration will always be given to students with alternative skills and experience provided they have the ability to benefit.

Introduction:
This course offers an opportunity to gain guaranteed progression onto a range of degree programmes in the Faculty of Science at the University of Central Lancashire including: Biological, Environmental, Forensic, Behavioural and Sport Sciences. It can also be used for entry (following interview) into Complementary Therapies.
Study Mode & Location:
This one year higher education course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.
Course Content:
The course comprises five whole modules and two half-modules, making SIX modules in total. You will study:
Y0C001 Skills for Success,
Y0C002 Induction to Science,
Y0C003 Manipulating and Presenting Data,
Y0C004 Forensic Analysis,
Y0C005 Medical Science,
Y0C006 Natural and Environmental Science,
Y0C007 Sports Science
and Tutorial.
Each week in tutorial,you will have an hour with your Tutor, who is also the Course Leader, to discuss issues relating to the course, study and any difficulties, progress and achievement, and any personal problems. Your tutor will assist you in liaising with the University.
Assessment:
The course is assessed largely through coursework which will include written assignments, practical investigations and, particularly in mathematics, short tests. There will be 1.5 hour end-tests (`mini examinations`) in three of the four advanced modules. You should view these `end-tests` as an ideal preparation for the more examination-based assessments at Level 1 of the University degree programmes.
In development of Study and Communication Skills and in Presentation of Data you will develop a Portfolio of Evidence as a testimony to the skills you have acquired and developed.
Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This is an intensive one year course designed to prepare students with little previous scientific background for progression to the first year of courses in the Scientific Faculty, and certain other named programmes outside the Faculty.
