Course programme
Typical course content
The physics Subject Knowledge Enhancement course begins in late February and for most students it ends in July at the end of the Hampshire schools summer term. In a typical week there are three full days of university-based, face to face training complemented by a variety of independent study tasks. It is an intensive programme which begins with deep and fundamental physics foundations, covering KS3 and GCSE Physics topics and refreshing mathematical skills, and then moves on to the more technical content bridging to A-Level. Teaching sessions are based on best-practice to maximise learning and there will be a wide range of practicals in our well-equipped teaching labs, including some chemistry practicals exploring the links between chemistry and physics. During the course you will also have the opportunity to spend one week observing science lessons in schools. Sessions are led by university tutors who are very experienced secondary and sixth-form science teachers. There may also be input from experts from the Institute of Physics, and the world-class physics and engineering faculties here at the University of Southampton.
Please note: This specification provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if s/he takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information can be found in the programme handbook (or other appropriate guide or website).
