About this course

Minimum of 2 years’ work experience in a small or medium sized enterprise.
Applicants must also possess: a UK degree/postgraduate degree or equivalent, and/or NVQ level 4 in Management or Professional Development Certificate in Management Studies, and/or relevant postgraduate qualification (optional).
Applicants without the above qualifications may be considered for entry onto this course if they have substantial management experience.
For applicants who have not studied their previous qualifications in English a TOEFL score of min. 575 (written)/230 (computer-based) or an academic 6.5 IELTS.

The course is specifically designed to offer support to you in your role within the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector; allowing you to gain a critical understanding of the challenging business and management concepts and frameworks so that you can increase your contribution to business success. Bolton Business School offers this tailored MBA which provides an opportunity to focus on the needs of this complex and growing sector; as well as equipping you with the high-level management knowledge and skills required in all sectors of business.
What you will learn

The course provides you with a comprehensive grounding in the key aspects of personal skills and managerial development. You will analyse and examine the business environment as applied to the SME sector and will be given the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts to personal and organisational settings by examining many of the challenges that businesses face on a day- to-day basis.

At the Bolton Business School the emphasis is on enterprise, entrepreneurship and understanding. You will learn key entreprenuerial skills including: critical analysis skills; high level presentation skills; business collaboration and consensus and team working skills.

You will take responsibility for your own learning and will also learn and collaborate in a small group environment.

What you will study


Students will study 6 modules in Part 1 (Years 1 and 2), and 1 module and a research based dissertation in Year 3.

The modules studied are Management and Leadership (Year 1); Managing Finance (Year 1); Managing Business Performance and IT (Year 1); Managing People (Year 2); Managing Business Growth and Entrepreneurship (Year 2); Strategic Management and Marketing (Year 2); Research Methods (Year 3); Dissertation (year 3). Each module is worth 20 credits except for the dissertation which is worth 40 credits.

Students will be assessed by the use of essays, case studies, reports and presentations as well as carrying out a practically based dissertation related to issues from their sector.

To obtain an MBA students must achieve 180 credits. The postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies (Small Business Management) is an interim award (120 credits). The postgraduate Certificate in Management is also an interim award (60 credits).
