Course Content
Course Content: (Year 1) Unit 1: Exploring Socialisation, Culture and Identity How do our gender, social class, nationality and ethnic origin influence the formation of our identities? Is it nature or nurture that makes us the individuals we are? How strong is the evidence that supports these ideas? This unit attempts to explore and answer the above questions. Assessment for this unit is by external examination. Unit 2: Topics in Socialisation, Culture and Identity The themes of Unit 1 above are developed through the in-depth study of one of the following topics: Sociology of the family; Sociology of health; Sociology of religion; Sociology of youth. This unit explores the influences of these themes on the attitudes, values and social experiences of both individuals and society. Course Content: (Year 2) Unit 1: Power and Control The themes of power and control in society are studied in depth in this unit. Subject options are: Sociology of crime; Sociology of education; Sociology of the mass media; Sociology of power and politics. (Please note that all options may not always be available). Unit 2: Exploring Social Inequality and Difference This unit builds on the knowledge and understanding developed throughout the course and explores the core themes in sociology such as power, social inequality, culture and identity.
