Course programme

This course explores professional techniques for composing and producing music for screen and stage, including practical and theoretical analysis of the scoring process and how to produce a music soundtrack using a modern computer music studio. The course involves working with Logic and other computer software and sample libraries to produce a score for a short film.

To introduce students to professional film music concepts

To enable students to create and produce music to film on a computer.

Synopsis

Week 1

Discussion: The purpose of music in film

Instruction: Introduction to working with Logic Pro and video.

Production: Produce a short piece of music to simple brief


Week 2

Discussion: Working with a director and to a brief

Instruction: Spotting a film and making markers for hit points

Production: Produce a piece of music with given hit points


Week 3

Discussion: Styles and Instrumentation

Instruction: Tempo mapping

Production: Begin writing piece to picture


Week 4

Discussion: Getting into the business

Instruction: Working with Sample libraries

Production: Continue writing


Week 5

Production: Finish writing, mixing and producing final piece to video
