Your Course
This course aims to develop understanding of the spoken and written forms of the foreign language in a variety of registers. It provides a suitable foundation for further study to A2 level and also in the area of languages for business. It also offers a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for students who do not wish to progress to further study in the subject. You should expect to do 4 hours of homework per week, 2 hours set by the teacher and 2 hours of private study.
The library houses a large variety of Modern Languages resources. You will also be able to access the Modern languages homepages on the IT network. Application for computer access is required. You will be invited to buy a subscription to 'La Cometa', a news magazine specifically aimed at A level students.
AS Topic Areas you will come across in your lessons:
· Media: television, advertising, communication technology
· Popular culture: cinema, music, fashion trends
· Healthy living/lifestyle: sport/excercise, health and wellbeing, holidays
· Family/relationships: relationships within the family, friendships, marriage/partnerships
The new AS Specifications for the AQA Examination Board:
· Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing. retrieving and conveying information on the basis of printed and recorded Spanish material. Time: 2 hours. Weighing 70%.
· Unit 2: Speaking - Discussion and Coversation of the AS topic areas. Time: 15 minutes. Weighing 30%
Learning Outcomes
During the course you will have the opportunity to:
· Develop a firm grammatical foundation by revising the grammar that you have met at GCSE and by learning more complex aspects of grammar, including use of the subjunctive.
· Extend your understanding of a wide range of vocabulary and language styles.
· Communicate clearly and effectively in speaking and in writing using increasingly accurate, complex and varied language.
· Develop critical insights into and contact with the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of Spain and Spanish speaking communities.
Your Tutor
Pedro Barriuso Algar who is a native speaker from Seville in Spain. He graduated with a degree in Spanish and English at the University of Seville, where he qualified as a teacher. After teaching English in Spain for two years he moved to Cambridge, where he has been teaching Spanish to adults. Apart from teaching Spanish, he has also worked as alanguage assistant and oral examiner. Pedro is currently teaching Spanish at schools in Cambridge and surrounding areas and working as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University.

Tuition fees: £360
Method of payment: Fees for short courses (10 weeks or less) to be paid in full at enrolment and for long courses (12 weeks or more) fees of 50% can be paid at enrolment plus 50% as a cheque. Course places cannot be reserved without receipt of both payments.
