Spanish & Spanish Express

At AS you will revisit GCSE topics at a more advanced level of language use and comprehension using a variety of approaches; reading texts; extended writing; video; listening material; regular weekly Spanish conversation with a native Spanish speaker and work in a language laboratory. Spanish is used extensively within the classroom and an hour a week will be devoted to grammar.

The second year builds on your language skills and introduces more complex grammatical structures. Spanish conversation is at a higher level; topics include a modern Spanish play; women in Spain, Mexico and Peru; education and employment; customs and traditions; the EU and the environment. You will also write an extended essay in Spanish on a topic of your choosing.

Spanish Express is for good linguists who have not studied Spanish before. From September to December, an intensive teaching and learning programme covers all the basic grammar of GCSE (and a bit more!). We use modified versions of AS level texts and you will have a weekly conversation class, to consolidate language knowledge and vocabulary, supported by guided study outside the set lessons. In January you join the AS Spanish group and take the summer exams.

ENTRY RECOMMENDATIONS:
For Spanish: Grade B in Spanish or equivalent foreign qualification.
For Spanish Express: Grade A* in another modern foreign language.
ASSESSMENT:
Listening & writing, reading & writing and speaking exams in both years. Coursework assessment at A2.
PROGRESSION:
Relevant to any business context from selling to negotiating contracts, Spanish can also be used in law, banking, insurance, tourism, airlines, teaching etc.
