The course will enable you to gain an overview of Special Educational Needs and disabilities in the context of policy, practice and professionalism.The critical evaluation of specialist sources will be undertaken to understand the range of perspectives which impact on the work of SEN coordinators. Ways of enhancing learning for pupils with SEN and disabilities will be a central feature of the course.

Reflective practice will be supported by maintaining a learning journal which will evaluate practice-based scenarios. The leadership of change in professional settings will draw on appropriate theories and resource management will be examined with reference to both professional and interprofessional working. Overall, the course is designed to enable SEN coordinators to better meet the needs of learners who have special educational needs and disabilities.

Enables current and aspiring SEN coordinators to develop their professional practice and lead the co-ordination of provision for children and young people with SEN and disabilities.
Explores research-based interventions in SEN provision for effective working with staff, pupils, governors, parents and other stakeholders.
Supports research-inquisitive self-improving education professionals who wish to acquire advanced knowledge and skills in systematic enquiry, critical practice and professional learning.
Learning experiences in one day and half day sessions, involving lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials.
Enables students to disseminate applicable ideas for professional practice and to confidently engage in academic and professional communication by developing skills of advocacy.
Facilitates a systematic understanding of professional knowledge relevant to coordinating SEN policy and practice.
Encourages reflection on the personal experience of situated practice involving personalised learning.
Enables identification of practice-based issues for systematic enquiry.

This course will enable you to fulfil the role of a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO). After graduation the roles and responsibilities of a research-informed SEN coordinator would be confidently undertaken. The advanced professional knowledge and skills would also be relevant to education professionals who were leading change and facilitating learning opportunities professionally and interprofessionally.

Key skills include enhancing interpersonal skills, undertaking information retrieval and analysis, self-management and innovatory problem-solving. Completion of the PG Cert in SEN could provide advanced standing for undertaking the Master of Research (Education) course, which in turn provide a foundation for doctoral study.

Candidates are normally required to have an honours degree and/or further qualifications relating to working in Special Educational Needs in an education-related environment.

Candidates are also expected to demonstrate a commitment to professional learning in the field of Special Educational Needs.

International students will need to demonstrate a good standard of written and spoken English and have an IELTS score of 7.0 overall.

The course incorporates the SENCO learning outcomes expected of The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination. This award may be available to students on completion of the course where they are qualified teachers.

Assessment

Summative assignments will include a critical commentary on the implications of legislative interventions for the role of the SENCO and the critical evaluation of sources to develop strategies for the leadership of SEN provision in situated practice.

Formative assessments will include tutor-facilitated online discussions, creating and maintaining a reflective journal, the collaborative exploration of specialist sources in workshop sessions and work in progress papers arising from assignment preparation involving tutor and peer feedback.
