Course programme

The Sport and Leisure Management course combines academic study with valuable work experience ensuring that you gain both a broad understanding of the sport and leisure industry and the management skills that employers have told us they are looking for.

With the 2012 London Olympics around the corner this rapidly expanding sector is expected to grow even further. Employment prospects are excellent.

Areas of study

Sport topics include: the role of sport and leisure in people's lives; policy and funding; and the influence of politics, economics, legal and social issues.

You will also explore management skills such as: project management; strategy and planning; employment law; financial documents, funding sources and budgets; staff (skill identification, motivation, retention) and marketing. Personal skills like time management, communication, career planning, research, and public speaking are also covered.

During your time at Chelsea School you will be given the opportunity to put your university learning into practice on a 10-week work placement and in your final year project.

The following are typical examples of work placements:

Public affairs team for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG). The University of Brighton is the only university to have an annual placement at LOCOG until 2012.

QUEST assessment officer for Freedom Leisure, the largest leisure trust in the south-east.

Working in professional football clubs and other organisations, such as Brentford Football Club, Cambridge United Football Club and Sussex County Cricket Club.

Career and progression opportunities

Employment-wise this degree is very flexible. Your specialist subject knowledge will be ideally suited to many roles in areas such as sports facility management and sports development, whilst your highly transferable management skills will make you an attractive candidate for positions in numerous other industries such as marketing and market research.
