The qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare you for further study or training. There will be both internal & external assessment on this course.
You will study five mandatory units, covering the following content areas:
– Functional anatomy
– Applied sport and exercise psychology
– Field and laboratory-based fitness testing
– Applied research methods in sport and exercise science
– Coaching for performance and fitness.
The mandatory content allows you to concentrate on the development of your practical skills and the broad knowledge required for entrance into higher education programmes in sport and exercise science.
You will also study two further units which have been designed to support progression to a variety of sport courses in higher education, and to link with relevant occupational areas. This allows you either to choose a specific specialist area in which you wish to develop your skill, or to continue on a broad programme. Additional units are likely to include:
– Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science
– Specialised Fitness Training
– Research Project in Sport and Exercise Science
– Physical Activity for Individual and Group-based Exercise
– Sports Massage

Course programme
Entry Requirements
No prior study of the sector is needed, but you should normally have a range of achievement at level 2, including FIVE GCSEs or equivalent qualifications including Maths, English, Science & PE.
Delivery and Assessment
The course will be mainly delivered through taught classes and lectures with some learning taking place using the college VLE (Moodle) and other electronic means including YouTube and other web based software. Assessment on the course will be varied and could involve written assessments, individual and group presentations, production of booklets and by practical performance. There will also be an external component of assessment in the form of synoptic assessments and examinations which will be sent off to the exam board for marking and assessment.
Progression
In addition to the sport and exercise science sector-specific content outlined above, the requirements of the qualification will mean that you develop the transferable and higher order skills that are highly regarded by higher education and employers. For example, communication skills, team working and leadership skills. This qualification is designed primarily to support progression to employment following further study at university. However, it also supports you progressing directly to employment, as it will give you the knowledge and understanding required to apply for a range of entry level sport and fitness roles.
