Course Structure

The Level 3 Sports Injuries course is divided into ten comprehensive modules.

Module 1: Contra-Indications to Treatment Referral

1.1 Assess Intrinsic and Extrinsic Injuries and summarise:

  • Implemental injuries
  • Vehicular injuries
  • Environmental factors

1.2 Define the following terms:

  • The ages concept
  • Psychological Fitness
  • Lifestyle

1.3 Explain the reasons for employing warm up and cool down routines.

Module 2: Basic Principles of Treatment

2.1 Introduce Planes and Axes and discuss structures and their positions in relation to the Anatomical Position.

2.2 Discuss a number of descriptions or landmarks found on skeletal bones.

Module 3: Sport Injuries to Lower Limbs

3.1 Analyse some of the most common foot problems.

3.2 Discuss Metatarsalgia giving symptoms, causes and treatment.

3.3 Summarise the following:

  • Heel Spur
  • Ganglion
  • Morton’s Toe

Module 4: Sport Injuries to Lower Limbs

4.1 Examine the knee and introduce the different ligaments that come under stress during sporting activities.

4.2 Describe medial ligament strain giving symptoms, cause and treatment.

4.3 Introduce the Apleys knee test and the Mc Murray Test.

4.2 Describe the rapid and slow swelling of joint effusion.

Module 5: Sport Injuries to Lower Limbs

5.1 Discuss a stress fracture, where it is found, its causes, symptoms, and treatment.

5.2 Evaluate a shin splint giving symptoms, cause and treatment.

Module 6: Sport Injuries of the Shoulder

6.1 Analyse injuries to the shoulder and show what roles ligaments and muscles play.

6.2 Identify symptoms, causes and treatments of frozen shoulder.

Module 7: Sport Injuries of the Head and Neck

7.1 Describe the two main muscles found in the neck, give a description of each and where they are situated.

7.2 Assess the following injuries, giving symptoms, causes and treatment:

  • Arthritis
  • Disc joint pain

Module 8: Sport Injuries of the Hand, Arm and Elbow

8.1 Explain the symptoms, cause and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

8.2 Define the following injuries, giving symptoms, causes and treatment:

  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Tennis elbow

8.3 Summarise your understanding of elbow dislocation.

Module 9: Sport Injuries of the Back

9.1 Examine the vertebral column and name the five groups of vertebrae.

9.2 Define the following:

  • The Lumbar Vertebrae
  • The Sacral Vertebrae
  • The Coccygeal Vertebrae

9.3 Describe your understanding of trigger points and give points to be remembered when applying treatment.

Module 10: Taping and Strapping of Injuries

10.1 Identify benefits to the athlete of taping an injury and give instances when it should not be applied.

10.2 Introduce procedures to be followed before taping and when applying tape.

10.3 Explain the procedure you would use when supporting the Quadriceps.
